It was Marilyn Monroe's Birthday this month (1/06/ 1926).
Marilyn is very important to knitwear, as she was among the key actresses who championed the Sweater Girl Look, which showed a generation of women that knitwear could be sexy, especially when worn over a push up bra..
The Sweater Girl look simply consisted of wearing a very tight, figure hugging sweater, to show off stunning curves. This look was made popular in the 1940's by actress such as Lana Turner and Jane Russel and later on by Marilyn Monroe. Actresses who followed this look were known as the Sweater Girls. This look was extremely scandalous; as although it showed nothing it also revealed so MUCH!!
Great Sweater Girl Quotes
"Bob, why are men so crazy about sweater girls?"
"I don't know Judy, that's one mystery I'd like to unravel."
Judy Garland to Bob Hope
US Command Performance, 1942
When Marilyn was entertaining troops (wearing a figure hugging sweater) she was asked, what she thought of Sweater Girls? She replied " You fellows down there are always whistling at Sweater Girls. I don't get all the fuss. Take away the sweater, and what have you got". Apparently the troops went so wild she couldn't get off the stage.
That gal had a great sense of humour!!
Happy Birthday Marilyn.
