Vintage Yarn

This week my local Auction house were having a Vintage Fashion Auction.  To my great delight one of the lots was vintage wool from the 1950's -1960's.  I was so pleased to be able to actually see how wool use to look - as this is hard to see from pictures as most of them are in black and white.

As you can see from the pictures below, that yes I won the bid (I just had to have them)!!  Isn't the colour palette extensive, and just look at the range and variety of shades in each colour!!  Just beautiful!  These are not safe, colour co-ordinating yarns that are so often produced by our modern yarn manufactures.  Instead, they had bright, bold and daring colours - that I know are going to look amazing knitted up.

However there are what could be seen as a couple of draw backs (if you are not me).  And that is each ball of yarn only comes in one colour (apart from 2 balls of White) and all the yarn is very fine, finer then a 4ply but is knitting to a vintage tension of a 2ply.    But fear not, I am not daunted, I have many 2ply vintage patterns that I have longed to knit but struggled to find the yarn for, so this is my chance - but they will have to be in blocks of colour!!

All of these tops here use a 2ply - click here to buy these patterns.

Patterns to Delight the Children.

Not long to Christmas and now is a good time to start making presents for family and friends.  My children,  like most children adore anything knitted especially toys or outfits for their toys - as well as outfits for themselves.  My Kids have already given me a Very long list!!  Luckily nothing gives me more pleasure then knitting for them.

Here are some patterns which I am sure will delight the Children.

This little bunny based on Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit is so cute.  He is made from vintage 3ply wool so try a modern 4ply and UK 11 Knitting Needles (3mm).  Peter Rabbit measure 7.5 inches tall.

Jemima is made up of oddments of vintage 3ply (again use modern 4ply), she also measures 7.5 inches tall.

Or make this adorable little doll's outfit like we did!
